This weekend, Islander Mark Surcouf crossed the finish line of an extraordinary personal challenge: running 150km throughout November, covering 5km every single day, all in support of ABC Jersey.

Mark’s motivation for taking on such a meaningful challenge comes from deeply personal experiences. Four years ago, his wife was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, a moment that reshaped life for their family. During treatment and recovery, ABC Jersey was able to offer emotional and practical support – something Mark says made a profound difference during an incredibly difficult time.
But the road to this challenge started even further back.
In November 2020, just three days after his wedding, Mark suffered a serious heart attack – a “terrifying wake-up call” that forced him to change everything. He quit smoking and drinking, but as stress built during his wife’s treatment, he found himself turning to food for comfort, eventually reaching 27.5 stone, the heaviest he had ever been.
Determined to take back control of his health, Mark underwent weight-loss surgery in August 2024 and has since lost an incredible 52kg (8.5 stone). Running soon became part of his new lifestyle, beginning with a Park Run in January 2025 and slowly building up to regular road running during the week.
This transformation gave him the confidence to take on something much bigger – a month-long endurance challenge to give back to the charity that supported his family when they needed it most.
“They have helped us non-stop and have been unbelievably good,” Mark said.
“This was a huge challenge for me and pushed me to a new level. I just wanted to give back for all they have done for us.”
And he absolutely did.
Over 30 days, Mark showed grit, heart and determination – running through tired legs, long days, unpredictable weather and moments of doubt. And this weekend, he completed all 150km.
So far, he has raised more than £1,000, with donations still coming in.
