What’s Changing with Breast Screening in Jersey?

SHARE

At ABC Jersey, we’re here to ensure Islanders have access to clear, trusted information about breast screening — and how upcoming changes might affect you or your loved ones.

What’s the current process?

If you’re aged 50 to 69, you are eligible to receive a mammogram every two years through the Breast Screening Programme.

However, unlike the UK, Jersey’s programme currently operates on an opt-in basis – meaning you need to register yourself for screening when you become eligible.

If you’re:

  • Aged 70 to 75 – you won’t be routinely called, but you can still book a screening every 2 years.
  • Over 75 – you should speak with your GP, who can refer you if screening is still appropriate for you.

You can register or book your appointment by contacting the Breast Screening Service directly via the Government of Jersey website.

So what’s changing?

We’re pleased to share that the breast screening system is now undergoing a significant and positive update.

Here’s what you need to know:

From 2025–2027:

  • Anyone who is eligible but has not yet registered will be proactively contacted and invited to attend a screening.
  • You do not need to take action unless you are overdue and haven’t yet registered – in which case, you can still self-refer by contacting the service.

From 2027 onwards:

  • Jersey will shift to an automatic recall system – meaning all eligible individuals will be called for screening routinely, just like in the UK.
  • This will reduce the risk of people “falling through the net” and ensures more islanders have regular access to early detection services.

A message from Sue, ABC Jersey:

“We’re incredibly pleased to see the move towards an automatic recall system for breast screening in Jersey. It’s something we’ve long advocated for. Until now, many people weren’t aware they had to register – and we know early detection saves lives. These changes are a huge step forward for our island.”

What You Can Do Right Now

  • If you’re 50+ and haven’t yet registered — don’t wait. You can contact the Breast Screening Service by registering via the online form on the gov website – to book your mammogram.
  • Share this information with friends, colleagues, and loved ones who might not realise they need to opt-in.
  • Keep an eye out for your automatic invite in the coming years if you’re eligible and haven’t yet registered.
  • Make self-checks part of your monthly routine — learn how here.
